Founded in 1904 by the Augustinian Friars under the inspiration of St. Augustine, Doctor and Father of the Church, the University of San Agustin (USA) has continued the rich legacy of scholarship exemplified by St. Augustine, the Library of the Church; Fr. Johann Gregor Mendel, O.S.A., the First Geneticist; and Fr. Manuel Blanco, O.S.A., author of Flora de Filipinas.



Historical Milestones

The University of San Agustin is a co-educational Catholic institution owned by the Augustinian Province of Sto.Nino de Cebu:
The following are the milestones in the history of the University of San Agustin:
  • July 15,1904 Opening of the school
  • Dec 12,1912 - Recognition by the government of the various courses offered as prescribe by the Secretary of Public Instruction
  • Feb 5,1917 - Formal incorporation of the school under the name of Colegio de San Agustin de Iloilo
  • 1935 - Opening of the College of Liberal Arts
  • 1936 - Opening of the College of Commerce
  • 1939 - Opening of the School of law
  • 1940 - Opening of Education and admission of female students for the first time
  • 1941-1945 World War II. - Destruction of all buildings except Urdaneta Hall
  • 1945 End of World War II. - Rehabilitation begins. Reopening of the school
  • 1946 - Opening of the College of Pharmacy; Opening of the College of Technology
  • 1947 - Opening of the Normal College
  • 1950 - Opening of the Graduate School
  • March 1, 1953 - Granting of university status
  • 1953 - Opening of the College of Dentistry
  • 1954 - Golden Jubilee
  • 1962 - Renaming of the College of Pharmacy into College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology in view of the offering of B.S. in Medical Technology
  • October 30, 1965 - Inauguration of DYSA, Radio San Agustin
  • 1966 - Opening of USA Printing Press
  • 1967 - Phasing out of the College of Dentistry
    Opening of the Conservatory of Music
  • 1969 - Opening of the USA Clinical Laboratory
  • 1970 - Consortium between the University and St. Paul's Hospital begun with the opening of the U.S.A.- St. Paul's College of Nursing.
  • 1971 - Opening of the Instructional Media Center
  • 1973 - Opening of the Department of Theology
    Fusion of the College of Education and Normal College into the Teachers College
  • 1974 - Opening of the University of San Agustin College of Nursing, and termination of the consortium between the University and St. Paul's Hospital
  • 1977 - College of Liberal Arts given PAASCU Accreditation
  • 1979 - Diamond Jubilee
    College of Law given PAASCU Accreditation
  • 1980 - Inauguration of the Tilipunan Community Center at Tanza, Ioilo City, a community outreach project of the University
    Opening of the Research and Development Center
  • 1980 - Teachers College given PAASCU accreditation
  • 1983 - College of Commerce given PAASCU accreditation
  • 1984 - University placed under the administration of the newly-created Augustinian Province of Sto. NiƱo de Cebu, Philippines
  • 1986 - Opening of the Computer Department
  • 1987 - Elementary Department given PAASCU accreditation
  • 1992 - Groundbreaking of USA Alumni Hall site
  • 1994 - Inauguration of the University of San Agustin Regional Center for Public Management (USA-RCPM);
    Inauguration of the USA-Advanced Technology Systems Computer-Aided Design (USA-ATS CAD/CAE Training Center);
    College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology given PAASCU accreditation
  • June 1995 - Transfer of the High School to its new Campus in Sambag, Jaro
  • 2000 - PAASCU accreditation of the Graduate School
